“A fearless fighter for farmers,” was how current Laois IFA County Chairman, John Fitzpatrick described the late Padraig Walshe in a tribute on behalf of the local organisation.
Mr Fitzpatrick said thathe had known Mr Walshe for a long time and expressed his sympathy to Padraig’s wife Ella, son Pat and daughters Julianne, Catherine and Elma.
“Firstly he was an excellent farmer. He won Creamery Milk Supplier of the Year, years ago which showed his ability as regards farming.
“His strong point was farm politics which he was hugely involved in. He understood farm politics to a tee. From his days as Macra National President to Dairy Chairman of the IFA to National Treasurer, to President and then President of COPA in Europe.
“I always found him very accessible," noted Mr Fitzpatrick. "He had a massive amount of information and contacts.
“The sort of person he was, was a go to person. If there was an issue or problem which he could not solve, then he would know somebody who could help you.
“He fought fearlessly for farmers. From his election as President of Macra in 1987 he has been to the forefront of farm politics since.
“He was as well known in Europe as Ireland. "He was always very free with his time and would deal personally with you.
"Not too many people had the ability he had,” he said.
He is survived by his wife Ella, and his children Julianne, Catherine, Elma and Pat.
