'A massive loss' Laois County Council pays tribute to the late IFA President Padraig Walshe

Padraig Walsh was a native of Durrow

Laois County Council's Cathaoirleach and CEO have paid tributes to Durrow native and former IFA president Padraig Walshe.

The council's Cathaoirleach is Thomasina Connell.

"It was with deep regret that I learned of the sudden passing of Pádraig Walshe, the former President of the IFA and a well-known farmer in Durrow, Co. Laois.

"Having served as President of the IFA from 2006 to 2010, Pádraig also had the honour of serving as President of Macra na Feirme and also as President of COPA - the European Farmer’s Union. His legacy will be one of service and leadership on behalf of the farming community nationwide; something he was passionate about.

"We extend our condolence to the Walshe family at this sad time," said the Fine Gael represenative.

Laois County Council's Chief Executive Officer John Mulholland also paid tribute to the man who was a dairy farmer in Bishopswood near Durrow.

"I am stunned at the untimely passing of Padraig and I wish to convey my condolences and the sympathies of Laois County Council to the Walsh family.

"I have had the privilege of meeting Padraig on a number of occasions over recent years. He always struck me as a highly articulate, thoughtful and astute man who held close to his heart the interests and values of rural communities.

"There is no doubt but that Padraig brought much positivity and confidence to the people of Laois and that his legacy will be one where his vision, knowledge and leadership led to a welcome development in farming over many decades.

"To all who knew and worked with him Padraig will be a massive loss to our county and to the country," said Mr Mulholland.

He is survived by his wife Ella, and his children Julianne, Catherine, Elma and Pat.
