Cottage damaged by van which smashed through barrier
Protection needs to be restored to a cottage in Mountrath after a car smashed into it recently, according to a local councillor.
Cllr James Kelly, the Independent, made the appeal at a meeting with Laois County Council.
He tabled a motion calling on the local authority to install a new road safety barrier at Gilmans residence, Abbeyleix Road, Mountrath following a recent road accident.
He explained what happened
“The barrier was hit before and this time the barrier was hit and a van went straight through to hit the bedroom wall. Thankfully the house is vacant but it could have caused serious damage,” he said.
The issued was raised at a meeting on February, 16 where Edmond Kenny, District Engineer, replied that repairs to the safety barrier will be completed this week following the collision.
While Cllr Kelly welcomed this, he said he had attempted to raise the issue in January at what he said it remains a very dangerous bend, especially for motorists coming into Mountrath from the Abbeyleix direction.
He added that there is an absence of speed limit signs between the two towns.
