In Pictures: All-Ireland Champions join the drama in Laois town

Mountmellick welcomes All-Ireland Champions the Ballyduff Drama Group from Waterford to town alongside groups from Mayo, Galway, Wexford, Tipperary and Tipperary in March for the town's drama festival. The Ballyduff groups were crowned champions at the All Ireland Drama Festival in 2022.

The button was pressed on the countdown clock to the return of the Mountmellick Drama Festival at the official launch in the town's Community Arts Centre recently. The festival's organising committee was joined on Friday, February 17, by special guests that included Laois County Council's Cathaoirleach Cllr Thomasina Connell. The launch was also attened by representatives of the main sponsor - the Mountmellick Credit Union.

The 2023 Festival begins on Friday, March 3 with groups performing plays through to Friday, March 10.

The Banshees of Inisherin director Martin McDonagh’s acclaimed play The Beauty Queen of Leenane will open the Festival on Friday, March 3 performed by Kilrush Drama Group.

The Pulitzer Prize and Tony award-winning play Proof by David Auburn is staged on Saturday, March 4 by the Glenamaddy Players.

The Kings of the Kilburn High Road by Conor McPherson well be performed The Ray Leonard Players on Sunday, March 5.

A Skull In Connemara by Martin McDonagh features on Tuesday, March 7 when Holycross Ballycahill drama group comes to town.

The Father by Florian Zeller is the Wexford Drama Group productions for Wednesday, March 6.

Audiences can travel back in time to 18th century England courtesy of Lucy Kirkwood’s The Welkin by Ballyduff Drama Group on March 8.

The Enniscorthy Drama Group take to the stage on Thursday, March 9 with Fintan Kelly’s Farsiders”

The Seafarer by Conor McPherson rounds off the Festival on Friday, March 10 courtesy of the Thurles Drama Group.

A big prize is on offer for the winning group since the Mountmellick Festival is a qualifying event for the finals which are held each year in Athlone.
