A huge voluntary effort is being put in to ensure that Portlaoise will have its first St Patrick's Day Parade since 2019 and the organising committee hope the public can play their part by supporting a fundraiser before the big event.
St Patrick’s Day Parade Committee is hosting a table quiz in Kavanagh’s Pub, Main Street, Portlaoise at 8.30pm on Friday, March 10.
While a bucket collection has already been held, the committee says the quiz is an vital event for them as it will help cover some of the financial cost of holding the Parade that will be held in Portlaoise on Friday, March 17. The committee promises a fun night out with lots of prizes.
Due to Covid, the Portlaoise committee have been unable to host a parade for the past three years, but the community can look forward to numerous floats, music, entertainment, trade stands, Irish dancing and much, much more again thanks to the effort that's being put in by volunteers.
The Parade will commence from Laois County Council at 12.30 pm going up Main Street (from the bottom to the top square) and expected to finish at 2 pm. The Parade will be followed by a community event on Main Street, Portlaoise involving Street acts, Irish music, trade stands, Irish dancing and much more.
The Chairperson of St Patrick’s Day Committee is Dominic Dunne.
"This is going to be a great event and it will be a major boost financially to the town, but of course also great morale for everyone living in Portlaoise and the surrounding areas of Laois’, commented Mr Dunne.
He invited everyone to come along to the table quiz to help raise funds for this event.
"Everyone is welcome to attend," he said.
The committee thank everyone involved in helping to ensure the parade will be a successful event, with particular thanks to Laois County Council.
To enter a float or to contact the committee with any queries, contact Chairperson Dominic Dunne at 0868312034 or Secretary, Pauline Flanagan at 0879984574.
The St Patrick’s Day committee consists of old and new members who meet weekly in Portlaoise Parish Centre. The members include: Chairperson and Events Co-Ordinator, Dominic Dunne; Secretary, Pauline Flanagan; Treasurer Eugene McDonagh, Paul Downey MC, Christy Bannon MC, Frank Ward, PJ Kavanagh; Wayne Haslam, Cllrs Catherine Fitzgerald and Noel Tuohy.
They will continue to meet leading up to the event in order to ensure maximum enjoyment and safety for all concerned.
