Billy Sheehan and his Laois Senior football team will welcome Wexford to Laois Hire O'Moore Park this coming Easter Sunday in the opening round of this year's Leinster Football Championship.
The sides have history in 2023 as Laois recorded a victory over Wexford in round 2 of the league with five-points separating the sides with Laois winning out 1-18 to 1-13. Evan O'Carroll getting the all-important Laois goal with Mark Barry and Paul Kingston kicking six and seven points respectfully for the O'Moore County.
This game will have a different aspect to it with it being a straight knockout game and the loser having to wait until the Tailteann Cup kicks into gear until their next competitive fixture. The prize for the winner will be a home fixture against Dessie Farrell's Dublin with the game due to be played in two weeks' time.
Since being defeated by Laois, Wexford recorded a good spell of results as their only other loss came to eventual Division 4 champions Sligo. They fared better against the sides who Laois lost out to, Leitrim and Wicklow, as they beat Leitrim by four points while gaining a point against Oisin McConville's Wicklow. They are also boosted with the return of Robbie Brooks, who was instrumental in his Castletown side claiming the Wexford Football Championship in 2022.
Laois will come into the game off the back of firing in six goals against London in the final game of the league as they missed out on promotion due to Wicklow having the better head-to-head record. Sligo winning the division after defeating Wicklow last weekend in the decider.
The game throws-in at 3.30pm on Sunday April 9 in Laois Hire O'Moore Park.
