‘That beats Banagher,’ Judge Andrew Cody exclaimed on hearing a speed van detected the same speeding car twice in ten minutes.

A car registered to Gerard Plunkett of Ballycrystal, Geashill, Co Offaly was detected driving at  74kph in a 50km zone on the Gracefield Road, Portarling at 8.13pm September 30 last. The same car was detected ten minutes later on the same road at 8.23pm doing 60kph in the 50kph zone.

“This is the same fellow coming back ten minutes later,” Judge Andrew Cody noted at Portlaoise District Court.

“That beats Banagher,” he exclaimed.

“The best you can say is he slowed down,” he added, noting the lower speed of the second offence.

The defendant, who wasn’t in court and had no previous convictions, was fined €250 for the first speeding offence and €500 for the second. He was given three months to pay.
