Laois council aims to earn thousands from big Portlaoise roundabouts

The Market Square roundabout will cost a minimum of €4,000 over three years

Laois County Council aims to raise nearly €30,000 from some of Portlaoise's many roundabouts through sponsorship over the next three years.

The local authority is inviting tenders for sponsorship of a number of roundabouts in the county town which is famous for the junctions. The scheme will allow the “selected sponsor” to have advertising rights on a roundabout.

The tender document shows that the council aims to raise up to €27,500 between 2023 and 2026 from some of the town's bigger and busier roundabouts.

The council says the minimum sponsorship price per for three years in the main town centre locations is €1000. Up to four signs can be placed on the James Fintan Lalor Avenue, Abbeyleix Road, Market Square and the new Fr Browne Avenue. This would yield a minimum total tender price of €4,000 from each to County Hall.

Other cheaper locations are the Timahoe Road/Pairc an Phobail roundabout, the Boghlone roundabout on the Mountrath Road,  the Ballymacken roundabout on the Stradbally Road, the O’Doran roundabout on the Timahoe Road, and the O’More (O’Moore) roundabout near O'Moore Park GAA grounds.

The council says the signs must be of 2.5mm aluminum panel with two-channel fixing rails to rear, to fix to poles.

The highest Tender for each roundabout shall be accepted unless two equal tenders are received for the same roundabout. In such a case the two equal tenderers will be given the opportunity to submit a revised tender. The higher of these tenders will then be accepted.

The Council reserves the right to decide whether any perspective sponsor would be accepted on any roundabout. The council says it does not bind itself to accept the highest or any
Tender.

The sponsors must construct at their own cost. The cost for the supply of signage does not form part of the tendered price.  The local authority says it will maintain the landscaping on the roundabouts.

The closing date for submission of tenders is Monday, June 19.

It's not the first time the council has invited people to sponsor roundabouts.  Supermacs and the Laois Shopping Centre have entered agreements with County Hall previously.
