Delight at success of charity open day at billionaire's mansion in Laois

The organisers of the Abbey Leix House and Farm are delighted with Annual Open Day on the property owned by billionaire John Collison.

They say thousands gathered on Saturday, June 3 for a sun-soaked day of family fun which included a food and crafts fair, art exhibition, a 5k fun run through the grounds, and live entertainment for every age group. 

"Spectators were treated to an elegant flypast by the 1950s-built Stampe Biplane, flown by Eugene Larkin and Yvonne Gavin. Following this nostalgic spectacle, the De Havilland Chipmunk, a restored treasure from the Irish Historic Flight Foundation, took to the sky. Flown by Mark Dwyer in the colours of the Irish Air Corps, the restored aircraft pays homage to its significant role in training Irish pilots in the 1950s and 60s.

"The afternoon's excitement was further enhanced with an overhead display by the aerobatic Christen Eagle, flown by Sligo-based Andrew Fenton. With a series of breath-taking loops and rolls, the act concluded to spontaneous applause as Andrew thrilled the crowd with a playful wing waggle as he flew by. MORE BELOW PICTURE.

"Renowned aerobatic pilots, Gerry Humphreys and Eddie Goggin, who has represented Ireland in the Aerobatics World Championships, showcased their astonishing manoeuvres. Later, they took time to engage with the crowd on the ground, answering aviation questions and sharing their passion for flight.

"Parallel to the air spectacle, the legendary Gordon Bennett Run celebrated its milestone 20th anniversary at Abbeyleix House during the Annual Open Day. Over 100 classic cars and their drivers graced the estate, creating an impressive display of automotive history," said the organisers. More below picture.

Proceeds from the event, including admission, raffle sales, and produce sales, will be donated to local community causes: the Abbeyleix & District Lions Club, My Lovely Horse Rescue, and a local girls' team taking part in the Wheelchair Soccer World Cup.
