Laois community's dream comes true with kingdom of play

Laois community's dream comes true with kingdom of play

After years in the pipeline and under 12 months since construction work began, the ribbon is about to be cut on the first ever playground in Borris in Ossory.

Work on An Ríocht Spraoi (kingdome of play) is complete and all that has to be done is officially open the facility so that local families can enjoy.

The diggers moved on to the site in the heart of the village in July 2022 to pave the way for the playground and  Multi Use Games Area on a site beside St Canice’s RC Church car park off Main St.

Laois County Council has assisted local people in their work but also gave the planning permission in February 2022. It's been funded by €50,000 Sports Capital Grant and nearly €150,000 in the shape of a Laois Partnership grant from Leader funds.

Apart from the countless hours of planning and campaigning done voluntarily over the years, local people set their own fundraising target of €30,000.

The playground includes the following:

  • Double cable zipline
  • Rope climber
  • Seesaw
  • Raised slide mound
  • Tower and slide
  • Hammock
  • Snake swing
  • Multisport games area
  • Sandplay areas
  • Tunnels
  • Picnic benches
  • Car parking

The playground has been sought for many years but a turning point in this journey was its inclusion in a plan for the village in 2018 by the Community Association.

The official opening of the playground and the Multi Use Games Area will take place today Tuesday June 20 at 12 noon. All the community are welcome to attend the official opening.

The name of the Playground is An Riocht Spraoi.
