Residents of an estate in Mountmellick have demanded that Laois County Council takes action to stop dangerous parking at the entrance to their estate.
Cllr Paddy Bracken, Fianna Fáil, made the representation on behalf of the people living in Ashgrove which is accessed via Parnell Street in the centre of the town.
A funeral home is located opposite the entrance and the town’s credit union is close by. The Mountmellick Arts Centre is not far away.
Cllr Bracken made clear what the residents want in a motion that called for bollards on either side of the entrance.
Cllr Bracken explained that the area is very busy.
“What’s happening is that people are parking at the entrance to the estate and it is causing safety issues and residents want something done,” he said.
Edmond Kenny, District Engineer, replied in writing.
“A survey will be undertaken in the estate to identify poor parking practices. Street bollards/furniture options will be considered at the mouth of the junction,” he said.
However, Cllr Bracken insisted that bollards are a simple solution that could resolve the matter without the delay rather than engaging in a “long drawn out process”.
The issue was raised at the May meeting of the Borris-in-Ossory Mountmellick Municipal District.
