Walking trails and outdoor amenities throughout Laois have been allocated over €60,000 for maintenance work.
In total 21 outdoor sites in Laois are set to benefit from the funding which was part of a national announcement of €3 million.
Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys announced the funding to develop and upgrade over 300 forest parks, walking trails and outdoor amenities across the country.
The majority of the 21 sites in Laois are located in the Slieve Bloom Mountains but the list includes other areas such as Garryhinch and Emo Court.
Minister of State at the Department of Foreign Affairs, Sean Fleming said he is pleased that €60,480 has been awarded in Government funding to Laois Forest Parks, Walking Trails and Outdoor Amenities.
“I welcome the announcement of Government funding for the upgrade and maintenance of Laois forest parks, recreation sites and walking trails.
This €60,000 worth of grants will help repair and maintain 21 of these local amenities in Laois. This includes maintenance and re-surfacing of car parks, re-fencing and general maintenance along the walking trails,” said Minister Fleming.
“Laois walking trails and forest parks are some of the best in Ireland. They are fantastic walking routes and scenery for families, young and old.
These amenities are also great for our physical and mental health. A good walk is the best way to clear the head and maintain your overall health,” he said.
This Government investment highlights the importance of tourism in rural communities in Laois, Minister Fleming added.
