Laois County Council is being asked to ease planning requirements around log cabins.

Independent Cllr Ben Brennan described it as “absolutely ridiculous” that people couldn’t place log cabins on their own land.

“You would build three log cabins for the price of one house and that’s three families housed,” he told the latest meeting of Laois County Council.

He noted modular homes were being constructed in the county.

“But we can’t put a log cabin in our own area because it is not fitting with the environment and the trees around. I think that is absolutely and utterly ridiculous,” he said.

“People can’t afford the downpayment that you have to have for a house, you would build a log cabin for that,” Cllr Brennan continued.

“Is it possible for us to have a debate on that. Can we have it sooner rather than later so we get the county development plan sorted out?” he asked.

Cllr Brennan was informed that the matter was to be brought before the SPC(Strategic Policy Committee) first to develop a policy which would then be brought to the council meeting to debate.

“I would just ask how long is it going to take before it comes back?” asked Cllr Brennan.

Fianna Fail Cathaoirleach Cllr Paschal McEvoy said he expected it would be back for the October meeting of Laois County Council.
