Rathdowney-Errill are set to host the Darren Hickey Memorial Tournament this weekend as the club pays respect to the young man who passed away in 2009.
In 2010, the Club decided to honour and remember Darren, who was the mascot to their Senior Championship winning senior teams in 2006 and 2008, by staging a tournament comprising of juvenile players. It was felt that it was only right that there should be a lasting memorial to Darren in his native town, and an appropriate way to pay tribute to the popular local lad was through a hurling tournament.
The inaugural tournament took place on Saturday, October 9 2010. That year, teams from Clough/Ballacolla, Abbeyleix/Ballypickas and Galmoy participated, Rathdowney/Errill came out on top. Since then teams from Galmoy, Lisdowney, Abbeyleix and from as far away as Doon, Co Limerick have won.
This tournament is now a well-established event and one of the highlights on the local GAA calendar. It is a fitting tribute to a wonderful young man, a celebration of underage hurling where all games are sporting, hurling the winner whatever the result, with all the players and supporters enjoying a fantastic day out.
This year's tournament takes place on Saturday, September 9 from 10.30am at Rathdowney's GAA grounds. The presentations will be held at 1.45pm with tea/coffee in the clubhouse.
