Laois Mountain Runners to the fore in Scotland

Laois Mountain Runners to the fore in Scotland

The British and Irish Mountain Running Championships took place in Peebles Scotland on Sunday, September 10.

This annual championship puts the best young mountain runners from Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and England against each other.

This year the Irish team had 15 athletes, including 6 from three Laois clubs.

Jack Mc Mahon (Ballyroan Abbeyleix and District), Finn Craig, Siobhán O’Loughlin and Kate Connolly (St Michaels AC), Della McLoughlin and Katie McLoughlin (Oughaval AC).

The championships had U17 races over a 3.8k course and the U20’s covered 5.8k on a course called the Cademuir Rollercoaster. The footing for the course was good but the steep climbs and fast downhills made it a challenging course for the young athletes.

Our four girls who all train together had a mix of experience and first time international athletes while our two boys both had previous experience representing their country.

First up on the day were our U17 girls. Della who was representing Ireland for her third time gave Siobhán and Katie a lot of advice and support in their first international competition. The girls had a great outing pushing hard on a very hot day; Katie 13th Siobhán 14th and Della 17th on the team scoring.

Finn was next up, fresh from his debut Irish vest in the World Youth Cup in Annecy last June. Finn Lead his team to a team bronze medal with a fantastic 7th place finish.

Kate was on the U20 team that took on the tough full course. This was Kates 5th time on an international mountain running team and despite taking a good tumble she finished as second scorer on her team with a good 13th team place 15th overall.

Last up was Jack. This is Jack's last year as a junior after a lot of previous outings in an Irish vest. Jack pushed hard throughout in very hot conditions and finished as part of the bronze medal U20 team. A nice way to finish your junior career and best of luck to Jack as a senior.

The six young athletes can be very proud of their achievements, and we look forward to seeing them in squads in the future.
