'Marvellous Abbeyleix has done Laois proud'

Government TDs in Laois have congratulated the Abbeyleix Tidy Towns Committee on winning the top prize in the SuperValu Tidy Towns Competition.

Minister of State Sean Fleming complimented all involved on their dedication over many years.

"It is an outstanding achievement and totally deserved by the people in Abbeyleix.

"The Tidy Towns Committee have been working extremely hard over many years, all in the interest of their town.  The committee has shown great leadership and they are an example to every community group across Ireland.

"The volunteers who assist on a regular basis are also supported by the Community Employment Scheme, local businesses and Laois County Council.

"The improvements in the Streetscape in Abbeyleix, as a result of improvements to many premises and the trees that are planted along the main street have totally enhanced the appearance of the town.  In recent times this has been very obvious to everybody who visited Abbeyleix.

"Abbeyleix have done Laois proud," said the Fianna Fáil TD.

His Government colleague and Fine Gael TD Charlie Flanagan was also delighted to extend his congratulations on wining the the awar which he said was a recognition of unstinting commitment, hard work and dedication on the part of the committee.

"This is a marvellous accolade for Abbeyleix and its people.

"Abbeyleix is fortunate to have so many active and voluntary committees offering leadership and support for the people of the town and surrounding area, and none more than Abbeyleix Tidy Towns.

"I congratulate those involved in other Laois towns and villages, all of whom have earned increased marks and the clear message is that the Tidy Towns structure is alive and well in County Laois," he said.

Apart from winning the overall award, Abbeyleix also won the Laois County Award and  Ireland’s Tidiest Small Town Prize.
