Heywood in its heyday before fire

The history of a Laois stately home destroyed by fire and the gardens that survived is being explored at a series of local history talks in November.

Ballinakill Tidy Towns is hosting talks on the history of Heywood House by Ger Dunphy. They series of three events are sure to be of interest to viewers of the popular RTÉ Nationwide show which featured a series of progammes on the history and occupants of Ireland's country houses.

The second of the three talks on Thursday, November 16 is entitled the Follies in Heywood. It focuses on the contribution of the Domvile and Poe family up to the construction of the Gardens in 1906 .

The subject of the talk on November 23 will be the construction of the Lutyens Gardens, the arrival of the Salesians, the accidental fire in 1950 and the events between 1950 and 2005.

Old photographs of the house and gardens, now in public ownership and maintained by the Office of Public Works, will be on display each night. Refreshments served and there will be time for a chat after the talks.

All support will be appreciated for the talks the first of which took place on November 9. The events are taking place in the Old School Community Hall Ballinakill at 8pm. Donations to Ballinakill Tidy Towns are appreciated.
