HSE CEO John Gloster met recently with the Portlaoise hospital catering team on a visit to Laois
The Midland Regional Hospital in Portlaoise has taken gold at the Happy Heart Healthy Eating Awards for the nutritious choices on offer at its catering units.
Brenda O’Connell, Catering Manager at the Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise, said the team is delighted to again receive the Gold Happy Heart Healthy Eating Award.
"We have received the Happy Heart Award since 1999 and since the graded system was introduced in 2016, the catering team have secured gold award consistently. Our catering team are committed to practicing and promoting a range of healthy eating choices and assisting, supporting, and adapting cooking practices to provide healthier food choices without incurring substantial cost.
"Our healthcare workers are busy and we aim to ensure they can be sustained and nourished in their time in work and make choosing healthy easier. Thank you to my team and to hospital management for their continuous support to help us achieve this award again," she said.
John Joyce, MRHP, Manager, was proud of what has been achieved.
“Massive congratulations to Brenda and her team who do an excellent job every day to provide healthier food choices. The Gold Happy Heart Award is an important recognition of the work that they do and we are very grateful of their commitment to improving and promoting health eating among our workforce,” he said in a statement issued by the HSE.
St Vincent's Hospital in Mountmellick won bronze at the awards which recognise the efforts hospital and healthcare settings make to provide nutritious meals to staff and visitors.
The Happy Heart Healthy Eating Awards have been running for over 25 years, and are a joint initiative of the Irish Heart Foundation and the HSE.
