One of Ireland's most successful citizens and best-known Laois people is happy with the victory of Francie Gorman in the IFA Presidential election saying he was the choice of farming's grassroots.

Anna May McHugh was an early backer of Mr Gorman and the Queen of the Plough says she is “absolutely delighted” for the President-elect of IFA.

Mr Gorman got a great boost in his campaigning early on at the National Ploughing Championships in Ratheniska when he confronted Minister Paschal Donohoe over Government support for farmers.

The National Ploughing Association's MD says he is “the grassroots farmers' choice right around the country”.

Ms McHugh, who also hails from and lives in Laois, believes he will deliver.

“I'm looking forward to Francie's Presidency as I believe the Association will be in very safe hands with Francie at the helm - he's massively passionate about farming and very pragmatic about the challenges facing the sector.

“Also, to mention the massive team behind Francie that made this happen - it was a tremendous campaign,” said the Ballylinan woman.

Ms McHugh was present at his campaign launch in Abbeyleix in September and returned to the town for Mr Gorman's homecoming on Tuesday, December 12.
