Christmas is a time to celebrate with family and friends, but it can also be a time of excess, particularly when it comes to alcohol consumption, says Drinkaware.
The national independent charity working to prevent and reduce alcohol misuse wants to support the public and encourage adults to drink mindfully throughout this festive season.
It says that if we all think twice about our motivations before we drink or consider the impact of our drinking on others, we should hopefully enjoy a safer, more joyous, and harmonious Christmas.
According to the Drinkaware Barometer 2023, the top motivations for people who choose to drink alcohol are ‘to help relax and unwind’ (44%), ‘to celebrate’ (43%) and ‘because it’s fun’ (38%).
Unsurprisingly, it says these social motivators are high on the list when it comes to the calendar of festive events and get-togethers that take place over the Christmas period. However, Drinkaware says other, potentially harmful drinking motivations need to be monitored and combatted with 55% of drinkers now saying they drink to cope, and 22% of drinkers saying they do so to conform, for example fitting into a group, to be liked or to not feel left out.
Furthermore, it adds that with 17% of adults citing that they drink to get drunk, the festive season can be a good time to stop and think about why you may be choosing to drink and exploring whether cutting back or cutting out alcohol might be a good option for you.
Drinkaware say mindful drinking is a key tool that people can employ if they are trying to make small, positive changes to their drinking habits. Drinking mindfully is an attitude towards alcohol and actively asking yourself questions about why you drink, without judgment.
When you drink mindfully, you are aware of how much you drink, and how drinking impacts your mind and body.
