Man due in Limerick court over death of Laois student in hit-and-run

A young man has been charged by gardai investigating a fatal hit-and-run which claimed the life of an award-winning Laois student.

University of Limerick student Joe Drennan, aged 21, who was originally from Knocknagad, Camross was waiting for a bus in the Castletroy area of Limerick city when he was struck by a car at approximately 9.50pm on  October 13 last.

Joe had just finished a shift at a local restaurant, was a fourth-year journalism student and editor-in-chief of the UL-student publication Limerick Voice.

A suspect was arrested and questioned about the hit-and-run last November and investigating gardai have now confirmed that he has been charged and was due in court on January 16.

"A man, aged in his late teens, is to be brought before Limerick District Court this (Tuesday) morning. He has been charged in relation to the fatal road traffic incident which occurred in Castletroy, Co. Limerick on October 2023 13, which resulted in the death of a man in his early 20s," said a spokesperson.
