Laois County Council chief executive announces retirement

Laois County Council's chief executive is set to set down from his role this year after a nine-year spell leading the council.

Mr John Mulholland announced that he intends to retire as CEO this summer when he met with County Coucillors  at the February monthly meeting in County Hall Portlaoise.

The Galway native was appointed CEO in Laois in 2015 after serving in Kilkenny County Council for several years. He replace Peter Carey in Laois in July that year after the post had been vacant for nearly a year following  Mr Carey's departure for Kildare.

The CEO was subsequently reappointed to a second term by the local authority.

Speaking to councillors he said: "You get long in the tooth and there are other things you want to do".

He asked councillors not to comment on his announcement of departure adding that if he would give his spell in Laois a "9.5 out of 10".

He has led significant change and investment in Laois since taking up the job including the development of National Business Park in Portlaoise as well as the building of new roads in Portlaoise, the building of Portlaoise Library and the kickstarting of housing construction in Laois.
