New Laois Tesco set to open in Portlaoise.
Retail giant Tesco is expanding in Laois where it is opening a new supermarket in Portlaoise.
The Leinster Express / Laois Live understands that it is expanding its business operations in the county town by moving to the Mountmellick side of town.
Tesco is opening in the Fairgreen Retail Park at Gandon Court which is located off the busy N80 national road that is the main route between Portlaoise and Tullamore. Apart from being located on a busy road, the new shop is located in a heavily populated residential area on the outskirts of the town.
Tesco confirmed to the Leinster Express / Laois Live that more than 40 jobs have created as part of setting up the outlet which will be smaller than the main Tesco located in the town centre.
"We’re looking forward to opening our newest Laois Tesco, creating 44 new jobs. This will be our 173rd store in the country, and Tesco Gandon Court, Portlaoise will be managed by Denise Barry, an experienced retail manager who has 20 years’ service with Tesco Ireland," he said.
Tesco's new shop in Portlaoise is set to open on Thursday, April 11.
Tesco is moving into a premises that formerly housed an Iceland supermarket. Ireland's Iceland operation ran into trading problems in the summer of 2023 when the High Court appointed an interim examiner to the company that operated the Iceland supermarkets in Ireland. The Portlaoise outlet subsequently shut down in September 2023.
The Iceland closure has been one of the few big supermarket failures in the Laois county town in recent times. MORE BELOW PICTURE.
The multinational retail group already has a big footprint in Portlaoise where it is the anchor client in the Laois Shopping Centre. Portlaoise Tesco is located in a 88,000sq ft retail space in Laois centre. It moved into its expanded premises in 2011 after the shopping centre underwent huge redevelopment which was stalled by the property crash.
Dunnes Stores operates two outlets in the town. The Irish chain carried out an extensive redevelopment of its original Laois store on the Mountmellick Road in 2023.
Lidl invested millions in the rebuilding of a new bigger store in Portlaoise in 2022. Aldi is located near Lidl and there are two SuperValu outlets in the town.
In August 2023, Tesco announced it would open eight new Tesco Express stores and upgrade 50 other outlets around Ireland.
