The Portlaoise-headquartered People First Credit Union has announced new opening hours in response to what it says is an 'decrease in member visit' to its branches in Laois and Kildare.

People First announced a reduction of hours on April 25 in a statement in which it says its commitment is to maintain its "human touch" while "embracing digital advancements".

"We wish to announce some minimal changes to our opening hours effective from June 4, 2024 aimed at enhancing your credit union experience while ensuring our staff's work-life balance and reducing our carbon footprint.

"In today's fast-paced world, convenience is key. We've expanded our digital services to meet your evolving needs, making access to our services easier and more accessible than ever before. The credit union has observed a decrease in member visits during specific periods, leading to a decreased demand from our members for extended opening hours.

"Recognising the importance of work-life balance and matching that with becoming more sustainable for both our members and environment, we're implementing slight adjustments to our opening hours," said the statement.

People First outlined what the changes would mean.

"While our hours are being slightly adjusted, rest assured, our dedication to serving you remains steadfast. Whether you prefer face-to-face interactions or the convenience of digital banking, we're here for you every step of the way," it said.

The credit union urged its to join them in "embracing the future".

"Change is a constant, but at People First, putting our members and staff first is our core value. Join us in shaping the future of financial services, where innovation meets with the human touch, prioritising both people and planet. Together, we'll lead the way with our People First ethos," it said.

People First Credit Union Limited (“PFCU”) was formed out of the merger of Portlaoise Credit Union and Abbeyleix Credit Union in September 2015. PCFU subsequently merged with Athy Credit Union in January 2017.

It employs 44 staff members and over 40,000 members.

The 2023 annual report showed total loans granted for 2022/23 was €21,163,401 which represents an additional €1,517,742 on the previous 12 months. The Loan Book at year-end was €38,995,526, an increase of over 11% from 2022.

The surplus achieved was €443,195 for the year ending 30th September 2023.
