Elected representatives are canvassing ahead of the Local and European Elections in June
A Laois Garda Inspector has been appointed as a liaison officer for elected representatives in Laois Offaly amid concerns over the safety of politicians.
Inspector Joe Culliton and Crime Prevention Officer Sgt Graham Kavanagh travelled to Garda Headquarters in Dublin on Wednesday, May 1 for a meeting on safety for elected representatives.
The timely event comes as scores of politicians in both Laois and Offaly are out canvassing door-to-door ahead of the upcoming Local and European Elections this June.
The Laois Offaly Gardaí were joined by Garda Inspectors and Crime Prevention Officers from every Garda Division in the country for a presentation on safety for elected representatives ahead of the elections.
Inspector Culliton explained that he was late for Wednesday’s Laois Joint Policing Committee meeting as he had been attending the safety event for elected representatives in Dublin.
Sgt Kavanagh delivered personal safety advice to elected representatives in both Laois and Offaly at meetings last year. The advice covered harassment, callers to homes, being streetwise and identifying signs of bad behaviour as well as security at homes and constituency offices.
Inspector Culliton told members of the Joint Policing Committee meeting that the event on Wednesday was about “safe participation in political life” as he apologised for being late to the policing meeting.
He urged the elected representatives to “be conscious of your safety and take steps because you are going to encounter negativity” with canvassing underway for the local elections.
It’s understood the meeting in Dublin was arranged in order for gardaí to raise awareness of the resources available to elected representatives who may be dealing with hostility both online and in person. The event was attended by gardaí from every division along with representatives from Ireland's new commission for regulating broadcasters and online media and supporting media development, Coimisiún na Meán.
