Bryan Corrigan, Labour
What are your priorities?
I believe that a large part of Ireland’s failure to deliver “an Ireland that works for all” can be mostly solved at local Government level. A stronger local government would ensure that such local economies are democratically and socially owned.
What is the biggest issue facing your area?
Our farmers have been scapegoated by the current government, this needs an immediate turnaround. There are numerous examples of farming families trying to do the right thing without correct supports or respect.
Many towns in Laois need the re-introduction of a town commission; Mountmellick is one such an example. Currently on one of the main western corridors out of Laois, more attention is required for its residents.
Why do you think you would make a good County Councillor?
I want to see transparency and accountability when it comes to and on behalf of voters. More of the money generated in the local economy should stay locally; recent carbon tax increases and property tax go back to the national exchequer for un-fair redistribution why?
I will be asking the harder questions at local level getting the most on behalf of voters. Laois traditionally had a strong labour following, the Labour party has not ran any candidate in my area since 2014 and this vacuum has been filled by “more of the same” or Independent candidates. If elected, constituents will have more choice in a fairer and just political direction.
Bryan Corrigan is a candidate in the Borris-in-Ossory Mountmellick Municipal District. In the lead up to polling day on June 7 we will be featuring profiles on all 47 candidates vying for a seat on Laois County Council.
