This morning Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphries TD announced a €16.1 million investment in outdoor recreation projects across the country. A fund of €692,750 has been allocated for Durrow Community/Family Cycle Trails and Portlaoise’s Triogue Way, under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme.
The Durrow trails will receive a total of €492,750 to upgrade existing walking routes into two looped cycle and walking trails suitable for multi-use outdoor recreation.
Triogue Way will receive €200,000 for enhancement works to encourage use of the trail.
“Our world class outdoor amenities continue to make rural Ireland the place to be for adventure tourists as well as those who appreciate a more sedate pace of life,” said Minister Humphries on the announcement.
“These projects are spread throughout the country, so everyone can avail of the outdoors. Some of the planned investment, which is taking place all over the country, will enhance existing visitor attractions while providing new opportunities to experience our wonderful coastal landscape.”
“This is very welcome funding for these Laois projects,” said Minister of State Sean Fleming TD. “This funding will support these projects and benefit the local communities in Durrow and Portlaoise, with enhanced local outdoor facilities.”
“It is important that people make the most of these local amenities which are places that families can visit and spend time in the outdoor fresh air close to nature,” Minister Fleming said.
Minister Pippa Hackett also welcomed the news, highlighting the hard work undertaken by the Durrow Walking and Cycling Hub.
“The Durrow Walking and Cycling Hub, have worked tirelessly to get this project to funding stage and I am delighted that they have been awarded the full amount that they applied for - €492,750,” Minister Hackett said.
“This government, through the “Our Rural Future” policy is investing, more than ever before and ensuring that our rural communities can continue to benefit from what nature has to offer. I was delighted to be able to support this project from the very early stages and will continue to work with the Hub as the project progresses,” she said.
“Well done to all those involved. A special word of mention must be given to Hugh Shepard, who’s vision, hard work and dedication has been paramount in getting it to this stage,” the Minister finished.
