‘Nothing done’ to fix vandalised Laois playground toilets

Mountrath toilets shut for months due to anti-social behaviour damage

‘Nothing done’ to fix vandalised Laois playground toilets

Cllr James Kelly has lobbied the council again to fix the toilets near Mountrath's playground

Problems must be overcome to allow Mountrath’s public toilets near the town's popular playground to reopen before the summer ends, according to a local councillor.

Cllr James Kelly, independent, raised the issue meeting with Laois County Council officials in July as a follow-up to a meeting in May where he emerged that the toilets were shut due to vandalism.

The May meeting heard that toilets, which are located near the playground and health centre, were shut after vandals damaged them six months earlier.

Cllr Kelly repeated a plea for action at the July meeting of the Borris-in-Ossory Mountmellick Municipal District.

“There has been nothing done to get those public toilets open again,” claimed Cllr Kelly. MORE BELOW PICTURE.

He did not believe opening the facility would be a significant issue as he said fault relates to a tap.

“We need to get them open as soon as possible,” he said.

Cllr Kelly was told in May that it would be reviewed by the local authority, in consultation with the local community and other interested parties. He did not receive a definitive commitment at the July meeting.

The facility has closed previously due to past episodes of anti-social behaviour. The playground is located at the Amenity Park on the Link Road.
