The number of new homes completed in Laois so far this year has slowed down with the latest figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) showing a 23% drop compared to last year.
The CSO has just published its new dwelling completions for the second quarter of 2024, between April and June.
There were 126 homes completed in Laois over this period with the Portlaoise Local Electoral Area having the highest number at 64, followed by Graiguecullen-Portarlington at 44 and Borris-in-Ossory Mountmellick at 18.
This compares to 127 new completions between January and March bringing the total number of new houses completed up to the end of June to 253.
This compares to 328 home completions in Laois during that same period in 2023.
During the second quarter of 2024 the Portlaoise Local Electoral area saw the number of home completions more than halved compared to last year falling from 158 in the three month period in 2023.
Nationally there were 6,884 new dwelling completions in the three months from April to June, reflecting a fall of 5.4% compared to the same period last year.
This is the second consecutive month in which new dwelling completions have dropped.
