The average cost of renting in Laois is up almost 20% on last year for new tenancies, according to a new report from the Residential Tenancies Board (RTB). 


The average rent in Laois between January and March 2024 was €1,205 for new tenancies, up 19.5% on the same period last year. The average cost of renting for existing tenancies reached €928 per month, a 2% rise. 


In the first quarter of 2024 Laois experienced the third highest rise in rental prices for new tenancies, behind only Leitrim and Longford which had 22.6% and 22.5% increases in rents respectively.


Laois is now the ninth most expensive county to rent in Ireland behind Dublin, Wicklow, Kildare, Meath, Galway, Cork, Louth and Limerick. 


The report revealed that the average cost of new tenancies in Portlaoise was €1,179 and €939 for existing tenancies.
