Parking outside of Laois health centre is "accident waiting to happen" says councillor

Cllr Paddy Bracken described the situation in Clonaslee as "thoroughly unfair".

HSE "must provide parking" outside Laois health centre, says councillor

Laois county councillor Paddy Bracken has called on the council and the HSE to address the "serious parking safety issues" at the health centre on the Birr road in Clonaslee.

The councillor tabled a motion before Laois County Council that both parties work in conjunction to solve this issue.

Councillor Bracken highlighted that there are no adequate parking facilities surrounding the building, forcing patients to park on the sides of the road.

"This is an ongoing issue," Cllr Bracken said.

"Elderly people are forced to wait on a busy and dangerous road after their appointments, it needs to be addressed. There's ample space for parking within the confines of that health centre.

"I’m urging the council in conjunction with the HSE to see to this issue," he said.

Mr James Dowling, Senior Excutive Engineer with Laois County Council, responded to Cllr Bracken's motion:

"There is no space available for on street parking outside the Health Centre, Laois County Council can request the HSE to provide additional parking within their boundary," Mr Dowling replied.

Cllr Bracken responded that this issue is "unbelievable" in this day and age.

"There’s an acre of land around this building, and its thoroughly unfair on elderly people to go in and out while parked on the side of the road. It’s unbelievable in this day and age," Cllr Bracken said.

"There are 10,500 patients who attend this centre each year, with over 200 patients each week. It's a busy road they are forced to park on, it's incredibly dangerous," he finished.

Cathaoirleach of the Council, Cllr Seamus McDonald seconded Cllr Bracken's tabled motion.

"I’m on that road regularly and I see that traffic congestion and parking on both sides of the road," the Cathaoirleach said.

"It’s very dangerous, and there will be an accident. There is land adjoining the health centre that could be used," he finished.

The issue was raised at the September meeting of the Borris-in-Ossory Mountmellick Municipal District.
