A man who was lying on the ground at Laois Shopping Centre during the day told a garda to F off. 

Desmond Martyn (43) of 1 Lake Gardens, Kilminchy admitted being intoxicated and engaging in threatening and abusive behaviour at Laois Shopping Centre at 5.45pm on July 17 last. 

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said the accused was “highly intoxicated” and “lying on the ground” on the date in question. When approached by a garda, “he abused her. Told her to F off,” said Sgt Kirby. He said the man had 17 previous convictions. 

Solicitor Barry Fitzgerald said his client was getting treatment for his difficulties. 

“I am doing counselling as well,” the accused added. 

Judge Nicola Andrews referred the man to the probation services and adjourned the case back to Portlaoise District Court on February 10, 2025.
