Laois SPCA turns homophobic vandalism into sign of unity

The Laois Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals have creatively turned a symbol of hate into a symbol of unity.

On Tuesday September 24, the charity's Portlaoise residence in Hynes square was targeted with homophobic vandalism.

Laois SPCA have been proud allies of the LGBTQ+ community, and recently took part in Portlaoise's pride parade.

The animal welfare charity have denounced this act of bigotry, and have said that they proudly stand with the LGBTQ+ community.

"I think a kinder and more inclusive world is only going to serve animal welfare," said Finn Ryan, chairperson of Laois SPCA.

"We are 100% inclusive and do not tolerate hate- we are very proud to have been invited to take part in Midland's pride parade this month," she said.

Ms Ryan spent the evening painting over the graffiti with an LGBTQ+ inclusive message.

The charity say that they were 'absolutely delighted' to take part in Midland's Pride Parade, and that their stall afterwards saw many successful adoptions.

"Taking part was a great day for us. We fully support the LGBTQ+ community, and our team members who are part of the community," the chairperson said.

"Kindness wins and will only enhance our efforts- we rely on kind people who go out of their way to help, it's how our team get the job done. Kindness will always win," she said.

The incident has been reported to Gardaí, who are currently investigating the matter.

The charity recently held an adoption drive in Petmania, which is now a monthly occurrence. For more on Laois SPCA, see their Facebook page.
