Portlaoise Macra to host open evening

Organisers say Macra is not just for farmers or agri people

Portlaoise Macra to host open evening

Portlaoise Macra have announced they will be hosting an open evening for anyone interested in joining the club on Friday, September 27.

The open evening is a great opportunity for anyone aged 17- 40 who is interested in joining to come along and hear from current members about the activities the club runs and the benefits of joining.

Since 1952, Portlaoise Macra has hosted a thriving club in the centre of Portlaoise, bringing together those looking for social opportunities and to get involved in their local community. Macra is for everyone – with a network of 170 clubs across Ireland, the organisation has alot to offer young people.

Bowling, cinema nights, quizzes, debating, soccer, badminton, social nights, coffee and walks are just some of the activities that the Portlaoise club has to offer. Members also have the opportunity to join in with activities on a county and national level, including Capers (singing/dancing), public speaking, farm skills, Know Your Ag, personality competitions such as Mr Personality and Queen of the Castle and much more.

Portlaoise Macra Chairperson, Sheila Fitzpatrick encouraged young people to consider joining Macra saying: “Our club has so much to offer from social outings, competitions, travel opportunities, agricultural affairs and everything in between.

“We would like to invite anyone aged 17 – 35 from Portlaoise to our open night – all are welcome. See what it’s all about!”

Jean Marnell, PRO, also mentions that Macra is not just for farmers or agri people as everyone thinks. Macra is for people from rural areas to join a club to help you meet people with similar interests in an isolated area. We are very welcoming and you all become a family more than friends. You will never meet a person who does not think that joining Macra was their best decision. The club is proud to still meet in their original Macra hall and to offer a place for people to develop themselves personally and socially.

For those interested in learning more, Portlaoise Macra can be contacted through their Facebook and Instagram pages, or by emailing portlaoisemacrapro@gmail.com.

The open evening will take place this Friday at 8:30pm in Portlaoise Macra Hall.
