A man appeared in court accused of burgling a house in Portlaoise.

Damian Fiodorowicz (43) of No Fixed Abode appeared in court accused of burglary of a house at Carmody Way, Fairgreen, Portlaoise on Saturday, October 19.

Garda Aidan Ryan of Portlaoise Garda Station objected to a bail application for the defendant at a sitting of Portlaoise District Court.

Garda Ryan said the alleged incident had occurred on Saturday night at around 10.50pm.

He said gardaí were on patrol when a woman flagged down gardai and told them a man had entered her home. She described the man as being five foot eight inches and she said he was intoxicated and had a foreign accent.

“The injured party said he was looking around the hallway,” said Garda Ryan.

He said the man was arrested on Saturday and charged on Sunday. In response to the charge the defendant said, “I told you everything already”, Garda Ryan said.

Solicitor Barry Fitzgerald said his client normally resides at 29 Carmody Way in Portlaoise. Mr Fitzgerald said that is where he has been able to contact him and he told the judge that it was more probable than not that the defendant would answer bail.

Judge Nicola Andrews granted the defendant bail on strict conditions including that he remain of sober habits, that he is “not to contact directly or indirectly the injured party or to watch or beset" the house she lived in at Carmody Way.

Judge Andrews said she took a very dim view of the allegation before the court. She asked if the defendant knew the alleged injured party and Mr Fitzgerald explained that he didn’t. She granted legal aid and remanded the matter back  to Portlaoise District Court on January 6, 2025.
