Abbeyleix Bog Project: IPB Pride of Place 2024: Monaghan Cathaoirleach, Cllr Cathy Bennett, presents Abbeyleix Bog Project with the prize for winning the Climate Action & Biodiversity category.
A Laois nature preserve named the Abbeyleix Bog Project, was honoured at the prestigious Pride of Place community awards on Saturday, November 2, at a gala ceremony in the Hillgrove Hotel, Monaghan.
The project won the Climate Action and Biodiversity category, beating off competition from Galway, and Dublin.
The Abbeyleix Bog Project is a conservation initiative that was founded with the intention to preserve and restore the peatland areas. Since 2000, the project has been underway, being ran by a group of volunteers, ranging from members of the local community, to environmental advocates, and organisations.
The judges were thoroughly impressed and praised the role that the project has played in the community.

In the opinion of the judges, this admirable venture demonstrates the benefits of innovation and dedication. An area has been rejuvenated and there is buy in from a range of stakeholders, volunteers and the wider community.
In spite of existential threats and initial struggles, the group has persevered and what stands now is a rich biodiversity hub.
The awards, hosted by RTE’s Brendan McArdle, and took place in in front of 400 community volunteers from across Ireland. The event was delivered in partnership with Monaghan County Council. In addition to the main event, the Pride of Place awards attendees received complimentary passes to the world premiere performance of Pat McCabe’s new play, 'Little White Lies, taking place on Friday, November 8.
Sponsored by IPB Insurance, the Pride of Place competition was initiated 22 years ago though a Co-operation Ireland programme, to acknowledge the invaluable work undertaken by volunteers, and those involved in local community development.
It has now grown into the largest competition recognising community development achievements in the country.
President Michael D. Higgins, Joint Patron of Co-operation Ireland, said the awards played an important role.
He stated, “The Pride of Place awards are a most important initiative, reminding us that creating societies that are ethical and inclusive is a task for all of our citizens, of all ages and circumstances.”
