Two students from Scoil Mhuire, Timahoe are to be honoured at a civic reception next Thursday November 14 at 7.30 pm at Áras an Chontae, Portlaoise.
Tomás Ramsbottom and Emma Burke were co-winners of the annual Intel Mini Scientist competition for their project 'Perfectly Paced' which looked at a proposal to power a wireless pacemaker through kinetic energy.
Mini scientist Tomás who has a heart pacemaker himself worked alongside his classmate on this project to help millions of people with pacemakers avoid heart surgery to replace batteries.

Head Judge, Dr Jennifer McKenna, Silicon Research Manager, reflected on the overall standard of the competition: “Taking a personal story as the inspiration for their project, Tomas and Emily looked at the world around them and asked “why?” This scientific curiosity in combination with innovation underpins the essence of science and engineering."
Timahoe NS holds a Intel Mini Scientist Exhibition in the school every year, sending winners to the next stages, and has twice won the national Intel prize as a result, while fostering a great knowledge and curiosity among pupils in scientific study.
As part of the prize, the pair won a grant of €1000 from Intel for their school.
