Man in custody for stealing thousands from Laois parking meters

A 32 year old man is in custody at Portlaoise Garda station in connection with the damage of over ten parking metres.

The man allegedly used an angle grinder to break into over 10 parking metres around Portlaoise and it is alleged that he stole a total of €4,250 from two of these machines.

The suspect was apprehended at 6am on Monday November 18 in Kellyville, while breaking into a parking meter. The man had allegedly stolen €750 from this meter.

It is suspected that the individual is responsible for ten separate incidents of damage and theft from Portlaoise parking meters that took place over the past month, with one theft from a parking meter outside of Lily's Bar and Kitchen amounting to over €3,500 stolen.

Eight of the parking metres sustained damages without any theft occurring.

An angle grinder was used in each incident and significant damage was caused to the parking metres.

A parking meter on Bridge street was targeted on the 6th of November, along with a meter on Grattan street on the 8th of November.

A parking meter in Lyster Square was damaged with no money taken.

The man in custody is reportedly not from the area, and has yet to be charged.
