Laois artist winning attention for fantastic fox mural in Limerick city

A Laois artist now based in Limerick has won lots of praise for a stunning new mural painted in the city.

Freelance artist Lulu Keely from Mountrath, known professionally as Ohhi Ohno, completed the artwork in wintry conditions, painted completely with spray cans on the side of a building at St Mary's Cathedral, Limerick.

It forms the first mural in a series that the artist has been commissioned to do by Draw Out Limerick, called the Wildlife Walls Project. Lulu will be adding more works over the next two years.

"Draw Out Limerick approached me asking if I’d be willing to partake in a residency with them to paint a series of murals for the Wildlife Walls Project," Lulu told the Leinster Express / Laois Live.

A graduate of Mountrath Secondary School, Lulu went on to study at Limerick School of Art and Design.

Now Ohhi Ohno is a multimedia artist with a specific focus on murals and illustration. Her work is heavily influenced by nature, mythology, dreams and folklore. She began experimenting with spraypaint during the pandemic.

"I started painting during covid and haven’t stopped since then pretty much - it became an important purpose in my life.

"This mural took a while to complete with the weather and I’ve never painted anything as realistic as this. The foxes fur has so many beautiful brown and golden and orange tones so I wanted to portray it as true to life as I possibly could.
"Some days it was freezing, other days raining, and I was working another job at the same time too, but I’m absolutely delighted that it’s finished and the feedback is so wonderful to hear.
"People’s kind words mean so much. Could not have done this without Ca and Darren from Draw Out Limerick, who’ve been a huge help in the creation and ongoing no work with this project.
"Absolutely delighted to be part of it and be able help Limerick become more involved with local artists and communities," Lulu said.
Draw Out Limerick praised her work saying "well done to our artist in residence Lulu for doing trojan work in the bitter cold. Take a bow girl".
Fellow artist Darren Ryan had this to say.
"Up a ladder rendering fur with spray cans on a 20 foot fox in the middle of December is it? Not a bother says Lulu. AMAZING piece of work I’m sure you’ll agree. Take a bow!!! Draw Out - Urban Exhibitionists Lulu Keeley"

For the next three years Draw Out Limerick in association with Limerick City And County Council and the National Parks And Wildlife Service Local Biodiversity Action Fund will be facilitating the painting of a series of murals of Wildlife around Limerick City and County. They’ll be collaborating with Draw Out Limerick and the artist Ohhi Ohno to complete these murals over a series of three years.
Lulu has also created other mesmerising artworks like these above. Lulu is available for commissions.
