A number of Laois schools to close due to snow

The decision comes as travel conditions worsen

BREAKING - Status Orange Snow Ice weather alert for Laois, Carlow, Kilkenny

Heavy snow in Portlaoise

Portlaoise CBS has announced its intention to remain closed tomorrow due to heavy snow and poor road conditions.

The school issued a statement advising that other secondary schools in Portlaoise have taken a similar decision.

“Due to heavy snow across Laois and especially around the Portlaoise area, our school will remain closed tomorrow. The other three secondary schools (Scoil Chriost Ri, Portlaoise College, Dunamase College) have made the same decision to remain closed.

A decision about Tuesday will be made tomorrow evening, based on the local forecast. But if there is no thaw, and the snow which is still falling, turns to ice, we will possibly remain closed,” the school said in a statement.

The Holy Family Senior School Portlaoise and Holy Family Junior School issued a statement saying both are closed tomorrow due to health and safety concerns travelling to school and on the school site. Kolbe Special School Portlaoise is also closed tomorrow and more schools are expected to close.

Meanwhile, Laois County Council issued an update in relation to the weather.

“Following a meeting of Laois Severe Weather Assessment Team today (Sunday), please be advised that sub-zero and very low temperatures are likely over the coming days.

Met Eireann have extended the current Orange Weather Warning for Snow/Ice for Laois from 5pm today Sunday 05.01.2025 to 8pm today Sunday 05.01.2025.

Dangerous, and, sometimes, treacherous road conditions are likely and care should be taken on both treated and untreated roads,” the council stated.

They advised that where possible, people should seek to minimise travel.

“Where travel is required, please plan/revise your journey, to prioritise use of treated roads over and above untreated roads.

Maps of treated routes are available on Laois County Council’s website.
