Gardaí are joining forces with the Council and Laois Civil Defence in order to watch out for the elderly and vulnerable during the cold weather.

“Portlaoise Community Gardaí, Laois Civil-Defence, and Laois County Council are working together as part of an inter-agency initiative to support the older and vulnerable in County Laois. Over the next few days, we’ll be out and about checking in on those who might need a hand.

If you or someone you know could use our assistance, don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re here to help! And if you see us in your area, feel free to say hello—we’d love to chat,” Gardai said.

That message was reinforced by a garda spokesperson who urged people to contact gardaí if they knew of people in need of help but were unable to assist them.

“If you have a concern for someone and you think it is urgent we would encourage  you to ring 999. If it is not urgent call the local station,” the garda spokesperson said.

He said community gardaí in Portlaoise have already been out to help some people who are alone in the cold weather.

The garda spokesperson said some people  may be unable to get provisions such as food and fuel due to the weather conditions.

“Check on your neighbours, be aware of your elderly neighbours. If you have any concerns about a neighbour we are quite willing to do that,” he said.

The number for Portlaoise Garda Station is 057 867 4100.
