Laois schools to clear ice with machinery in hopes of reopening Friday

Schools across Laois are desperately attempting to clear snow and ice from school property, in the hopes of reopening on Friday January 10.

Scoil Mhuire, Abbeyleix have secured machinery to attempt to clear ice and snow from the set down area and staff car park.

Likewise, Coláiste Íosagáin in Portarlington have contacted local representatives to help grit the school car park.

"On Thursday, [a member of staff] is going to scrape the carpark with the tractor to remove the ice," Justin Brown, Principal at Coláiste Íosagáin told the Leinster Express / Laois Live.

"The school building is warm and we continue to have the heating on. We will spend tomorrow clearing the staff carpark with a view to reopening on Friday, 10th of January," he said.

"We have also been in contact with Cllr Eddie Fitzpatrick. He is going to ask the Council to grit the school grounds tomorrow. I will be in touch tomorrow to confirm arrangements for Friday, 10th. Please God we will be able to return to some sort of normality then in advance of the weekend," Mr Brown finished.

The Board of Management at Scoil Mhuire in Abbeyleix have secured machinery to attempt to clear the set down area and staff carpark tomorrow afternoon, with a view to hopefully opening Friday 10th January.

The school have decided to remain closed on Thursday in light of the latest advice from the Road Safety Authority and Met Eireann's forecast.
"This decision has been made with the utmost consideration for the health and safety of our pupils, their parents and guardians and the staff," Scoil Mhuire announced.
"A Status Orange weather warning is still in effect for Laois. Class teachers will post some work for each class group on Aladdin. There is no pressure to complete this work," they said.
"We have secured machinery to attempt to clear the set down area and staff carpark tomorrow afternoon with a view to hopefully opening Friday 10th January.
"However, we will continue to monitor the situation closely and keep you updated. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation at this time," the school finished.
