Motorists are warned the thaw will be slower in some areas and road conditions will continue to be very poor

Laois Civil Defence help rescue motorists on the Slieve Bloom Mountains

A number of motorists were rescued after getting stuck on roads on the Slieve Bloom Mountains.

A number of motorists were rescued after getting stuck on roads on the Slieve Bloom Mountains on Friday night, January 10. 
Laois Civil Defence and  An Garda Síochána were called in to help the stranded motorists. 


"While temperatures have risen it will take a number of days for elevated areas across the county to thaw fully," said a spokesperson for Laois Civil Defence. 


"Where possible, motorists are advised to avoid elevated areas over the weekend. The thaw will be slower in these areas and road conditions will continue to be very poor. "


Meanwhile Met Éireann has issued a status yellow weather warning for fog for Laois. 


The warning will come into effect from 6pm on Saturday and remain in place until 9am on Sunday. The forecaster is warning that foggy conditions will lead to impaired visibility.
