Camogie Association recognise Laois journalist for outstanding sports reporting

The Camogie Association hosted its annual Media, Referee, and Volunteer Awards ceremony at the weekend, recognising the outstanding contributions of individuals who have dedicated their time and talents to Camogie throughout 2024.

One such individual was Leinster Express / Laois Live sports reporter Gavin Cooper, who was recognised for his excellent coverage of camogie in Laois.

The Camogie Association officially presented Mr Cooper with the The Local Media Award (Mick Dunne Memorial Award).

Gavin's reporting stood out to the judging panel due to its accuracy, consistency, quality and variety of coverage. Gavin has kept Laois sports fans up to date through match reporting, interviews, live updates from matches, and reviews.

The impact, colour and emotional appeal of Gavin's pieces stood out both locally and nationally, as well as the presentation of the content.

“On behalf of The Camogie Association, I would like to thank all of the volunteers, referees, and media representatives for their invaluable contributions to camogie," said Mr Molloy.

"Their dedication and passion is the driving force behind camogie's continued growth and success. They are the reason that our players receive the recognition they deserve, our clubs thrive, and our sport reaches new audiences," he said.

"Their hard work and commitment are truly invaluable, and we are deeply grateful for their support," Mr Molloy finished.

The event was a celebration of passion, commitment, and community, highlighting the vital role these individuals play in the growth and success of camogie.

"When you cover matches, you nearly become a supporter," Gavin Cooper said.

"Travelling around to these matches, you want them to win. When they miss, you have your hands on your head. You get caught up in it all, but that makes it even easier to write when you have so much interest in the game itself," he said.

"I really want to thank Laois Camogie and in particular St Brigid's," he said.

"All of the clubs that helped me in all of my coverage, players and managers. If they don't talk, I don't have a story. When the email came in that I had won, I was in shock. I'm relatively new into the career, I'm two years in the job," he explained.

"I want to thank everyone who has helped me along the way, with interviews after matches and before matches. I especially want to thank Brian Bowe, Pat Collier, Robert Jones and Paddy Dwyer," Gavin finished.

The awards night was hosted on the night by Eileen Dunne, with a number of media category awards named after Mick Dunne, Eileen’s father, in recognition of the outstanding contribution that Mick Dunne made to the promotion of Camogie throughout his life.

The ceremony honoured 28 volunteers from across Ireland, each of whom has made a significant impact on their local clubs and counties. These individuals have served in various capacities, including coaches, mentors, administrators, and fundraisers.

"Their dedication and tireless efforts have ensured the continued growth and development of camogie at all levels," an organiser said.

The prestigious Síghle Nic an Ultaigh Award, a Distinguished Service Award recognising outstanding contributions to the Camogie Association in the area of Administration, was presented to Mary Newman of Glen Rovers.

"Mary has been an integral part of the camogie community in Cork for over 40 years, serving in numerous roles for both her club and the county board," said the Camogie Association.

"Her unwavering commitment and passion for the sport have made a lasting impact on the lives of countless players and volunteers.

"Her dedication, passion, and impact have left a lasting legacy on the camogie community," said the Camogie Association.
