WATCH: Laois school qualifies for Junk Kouture National Final

A Laois school has qualified in the Regional Heat of the Junk Kouture Finals this year, and will take part in the national final this summer.

Heywood Community School Transition Year students Aine Carter, Kaylagh O’ Mara and Elaine Miller have qualified for the National Junk Kouture Finals this year.

More below video.

This international competition sees students design and model their own creations made from recycled materials.

The girls represented the school last night in the Helix Dublin with their creation ‘Saline Queen’. Their entry got through last night to the National Finals in May.

"Well done to Art Teacher Ms. Webster for guiding the team through the process from the very beginning," the school praised.

This costume is inspired by the endless battle against plastic waste and pollution.

The girls chose to highlight the impact of plastic waste in both the sea and land. The name Saline, which is a salt and water solution, came from the use of salt bags coupled with the mermaid dress design.

With over 1200 entries to the Junk Kouture 2025 competition, five Laois schools qualified had for this year’s Regional Finals.
