Man accused of having sawn-off shotgun, ammunition and drugs in Laois

A man appeared in court accused of possessing a gun, ammunition, cocaine press and drugs.

James Carroll (45) of 92 Cherrygrove, Portlaoise is accused of having cannabis, cocaine, MDMA, tetrahydrocannabinol, N-Ethylpentedrone for sale or supply and a 20 gauge double barrel sawn-off shotgun along with 23 shotgun cartridges at his address on June 16 last year.

He is further accused of possessing MDMA, cocaine and cannabis valued at over €13,000 at his address on June 16, 2024. 

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said the DPP had directed that the case proceed on indictment. He requested six weeks for preparation of the book of evidence.  

The court was told the defendant is on bail with strict conditions from the high court. 

Solicitor Michael Byrne said his client was required to sign on at a garda station seven days a week. He asked that this condition be relaxed to three days a week. 

Judge Susan Fay said that would be a matter for the high court. She adjourned the case to  Portlaoise District Court on May 19 for service of a book of evidence.
