A blocked drain is creating a dangerous situation for drivers on a Laois road.

Drivers are unable to see where a road edge drops into a deep drain due to flooding, according to Portlaoise Municipal District Cllr Marie Tuohy.

She tabled a motion to the March meeting of Portlaoise Municipal District, asking for the flooding to be addressed at Drimaterill, Ballinakill, caused by a blocked drain and stream.

She described the problem for Laois motorists.

"It's a well travelled road. There is a concrete path where the culvert is blocked, causing the stream to overflow.

"When it rains heavily it is flooded and drivers can't see where the drain is. It's at a turn on the road at the Manor Hotel. Water is flowing back down onto the road. They can't see where the road and the drain are, and its a nice deep drain," Cllr Tuohy said.

Cllr John Joe Fennelly said that work had been done there on his request, but "maybe it's not cleared".

In response to Cllr Tuohy's motion, the council agreed to unblock the drains.
