Sinn Féin spokesperson on Finance, Deputy Pearse Doherty, will hold a public meeting alongside Laois Senator Maria McCormack in Portlaoise.

On Tuesday June 24, Sinn Féin will hold a public meeting in the Midlands Park Hotel, Portlaoise in defence of Irish neutrality.

In a statement to the Leinster Express / Laois Live, Deputy Doherty stated that "the fight to defend Ireland’s neutrality is on".

"We are here in Galway to send Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael a message: We will not sit back while you disgracefully move to dismantle the Triple Lock and to demolish our neutrality," Deputy Doherty said ahead of the Laois meeting.

“When we fight to defend our neutrality, we fight to defend our future, especially the futures of  our young people.

“We will keep going, never give up and never give in until this government’s disgraceful plan to destroy Ireland’s neutrality is defeated.

“If Micheál Martin and Simon Harris are so confident that their plan to demolish our neutrality has the support of the Irish people, put it to them in a referendum.

“Let the people have their say - Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael will get their answer loudly and clearly," the statement finished.

Senator Maria McCormack is Sinn Féín's only elected representative in county Laois, following the shock party resignations of key figures Brian Stanley TD, Portlaoise Cllr Caroline Dwane Stanley and Portarlington Cllr Aidan Mullins.

Party leader Mary Lou McDonald recently visited Portlaoise as part of Senator McCormack's ongoing campaign for Endometriosis Awareness.
