St. Joseph’s National School, Borris-in-Ossory wants students 'free to be kids'

St. Joseph’s National School, Borris-in-Ossory held their ‘phone free’ art competition for students entitled “Free to be kids” on Thursday June 19.

“Go Phone Free” is a voluntary initiative which invites Parents and Guardians to collectively agree, in respect of their children, to the following code: No smartphones while enrolled in primary school, no social media while enrolled in primary school and to respect the age rating on video games.

Parents of children attending St. Joseph’s National School (Borris-in-Ossory), Scoil Bhríde (Rathdowney), St. Colmcille’s National School (Errill) and Killadooley National School have the option to sign a pact declaring that they will go ‘phone free’.

The schools Parents Association spoke to the Leinster Express / Laois Live on this phone free pact.

"A special thanks to all the children for the art work, school principal and teachers for their support and to the parents and Guardians who attended the art exhibition," a representative said.

The Parents’ Association of St. Joseph’s National School told the Leinster Express that

"This ‘free to be kids’ campaign highlights the wonderful freedom that children can have without the need to resort to a smartphone or social media," they said.

"The art work highlights everything that is good and wholesome about childhood. Well done to all the children on the wonderful art work," the representative finished.

So far, St Joseph's NS is the second of the four schools to hold their art competition.

Borris-in-Ossory Fine Gael Cllr Conor Bergin recently expressed his 'delight' to support this initiative in four local schools. recently expressed his 'delight' to support this initiative in four local schools.

"I am looking forward to speaking at their public meeting on October 2nd and fully support their campaign," Cllr Bergin announced.
