Outgoing Cathaoirleach of Laois County Council Cllr Padraig Fleming led the commemoration, with Margot Coogan, Chieftain of the Lalor Clan, on Monday, June 30 outside Laois County Council offices.

"Today is testament to the esteem in which he continues to be held," Cllr Fleming said.

The wreath laying was attended by a delegation of visitors from Franklin City and Williamson County, Tennessee, United States, which is twinned with Laois. Laois county councillors all also attended the event, which followed the June council meeting.

James Fintan Lalor from Tinnakill in Laois lived from 1807 to 49, and was a nationalist writer, activist, and farmland reformer. He was from a famous political family, the eldest of eight sons and three daughters of Patrick Lalor, a tenant farmer and activist for catholic emancipation who served as MP for Queen's County. Another son, Richard served as MP for Queen's County also, while Peter emigrated to Australia where he led a miners’ rising at Eureka Stockade in 1854 and served as a member of the Victoria legislature.
